Overview

Heriot-Watt University is a public research university in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was founded as the School of Arts of Edinburgh – the first mechanics’ institute in the world in 1821, and received university status through a royal charter in 1966, making it one of the oldest higher education institutions in the UK.

The university has five global campuses; Edinburgh, Scottish Borders, Orkney, Dubai and Malaysia, all of which offer students strong diversity and unique international experiences with both modes of study. It also offers professional programmes in business, engineering, technology, design and the physical, social and life sciences – fields of study that provide access to genuine impact professionally.

Heriot-Watt University has about 27,000 students globally, roughly 15,570 from various campuses ~, and~ more than 11,000 students study through its academic partners and online distance learning. It is one of Scotland’s most international universities, and a large part of the students studying on its Edinburgh campus are from non-UK locations.

Heriot-Watt University prides itself on delivering high-quality, academic education that has relevance to working life. Its teaching approach is centered on collaboration between faculty, students, and industry, allowing course content to reflect the global and professional landscape by allowing its students to be in touch with knowledge and concepts being developed in the real world.

Heriot-Watt University received a Silver award in recognition of its teaching practices by the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). TEF was launched in 2017 with a mission to demonstrate the standards of quality in teaching and learning in higher education: Heriot-Watt’s Silver award signifies the strong evidence that Heriot-Watt meets (and consistently exceeds) national quality standards.

Heriot-Watt safeguards academic quality through specified processes of continuous improvement for its courses; formally updating its courses and course materials, alongside assessment methods; and the awareness of faculty to continuously engage in professional development and research. These processes ensure that students are educated in a context that is progressive and allows greater development of critical thinking, encouraged innovation, and prepares students for the work with the entry into graduate study or their first thinking about work placement
