About the course

This degree is aimed at people who enjoy helping young children grow and who would like to improve their welfare. The program examines important early childhood concepts, policies and methods which give students a strong start in childcare, education, family support and similar professions.Child development, play, security, the early years curriculum and inclusion are among the subjects investigated by students. Academic knowledge is mixed with practical skills, so learners can relate their studies to real work during placements and through case study analysis. Other important topics considered are well-being and health, children’s rights, leadership in preschools and how different social and cultural factors influence childhood. The program promotes practicing with care, making right choices and always keeping professional skills up-to-date, so students can effectively help children. Along the way, students have dedicated tutors and can take part in workshops, seminars and talks from industry experts involved in early childhood care.Due to the focus on helping students gain skills for work, those who graduate have the ability and confidence to work in nurseries, schools, children’s centres and family support services. Students also gain preparation for future work and study, since the course can lead to a PGCE in teaching, postgraduate training in social work or qualifications in child psychology.Learning in Canterbury, which is famous for its supportive environment for students, is suited to training upcoming industry professionals in early years education and care. The degree matches the requirements of the sector and combines solid academic content, practical training and jobs-related lessons.
