About the course

The BSc (Hons) Animal Welfare Sciences course is for people who want to study animal welfare in many types of situations, from farm animals to zoo animals and those in the wild. The course studies the medical, mental and legal aspects of animal welfare, using a mix of classroom learning and practical experience. The main topics covered include animal behaviour, physiology, health care, nutrition, ethics, relevant laws and ways to measure animal welfare. Students are taught to analyze how farm animals are cared for, learn what animals require and use research findings to raise animal care and policy to a higher level.During the course, students practice what they have learned by handling projects in labs, traveling to field sites and getting work experience in various animal care groups. Research, analyzing statistics and clear communication are important topics the course discusses to support animal welfare. Thanks to advanced facilities and instruction, students increase their analytical, observational and professional abilities. The course prepares students for jobs in animal welfare organizations, surveillance agencies, government offices, research centers and those helping animals. The qualification is important for continuing study in veterinary science, animal behaviour or research at the graduate level.
